Balatonmáriafürdő

The silky, sandy beach once owned by the ducal Festetics family was a resort well liked , before the 1880s already, by people who like relaxing in quiet surroundings.

The phylloxera epidemic of 1891 destroyed the vineyards. The Agriculture Department of the time mandated Count Imre Széchenyi to parcel out the rented off-beach area near the boundary with Keresztúr where the phylloxera couldn't survive. The results surpassed all expectations. The vineyards and orchards were yielding well after some 3-4 years, thereby attracting settlers.

The Southern Railway Company had established a train stop, development was speeding up, and further parcellings were being done. In 1902, a bathing association was founded, and there were plans, realized only in 1969, to establish a port. In 1912, a 36-room hotel and a bath house were built on the beach area created on about six acres. Pensions and homes were built one after the other, and in a short time the settlement became one of the most popular resort places of the southern shore of Lake Balaton. It received its name from Imre Széchenyi's wife, Mária .

A 1926 government decree unified the settled areas, then called Mária-telep (Mária-settlement) and Hullám-telep (Surf-settlement) under the name Balatonmária with small town status. The original charter may be viewed in the mayor's office.
The village received its final name in a home secretary order in 1927, becoming Balatonmáriafürdo and receiving town status. According to 1993 data, it had a prestigious place among the 28 holiday resorts around Lake Balaton.

Following municipal elections, the Chamber of Deputies of Balatonmáriafürdo had established an autonomous mayor's office.

What advantages does Balatonmáriafürdo have to offer?

First of all, it has preserved its natural environment.
It ensures a clean beach with a healthy climate, fit for peaceful recreation.
Those who have come to know this place will return to it, because they want to see the superb panorama again and again: the high hills of the lovely North Shore, the high basalt hills (Szigliget, Badacsony, Gulács, Szentgyörgy-hegy) rising shoulder to shoulder, with white buildings sitting on their sides, the hanging-beach reed teeming with life.
In addition , there is a good railway connection, new commercial establishments, travel offices, a savings bank, a post office, a market, a cinema , sports facilities - everything needed for a leisurely summer vacation. Regularly scheduled boat connections ensure excursion opportunities to the resort areas of the North Shore. Those who like tourism may explore the ancient moorland of Nagyberek, the protected cellars of the Bokros Hill of Keresztúr, and the fine, tasty wines produced here.
