Situation, things to see
Vonyarcvashegy, as one can say, is close to everything, at least to places which enhance interests.
Further on, Keszthely is the charming town of the Balaton with cultural spots and events (castle, museums, summer festivals). Then comes the row of thermal baths. Hévíz, the largest thermal bath in Europe is just 7 kilometres from Keszthely. If you like diversity of the same activity, why not to choose Kehidakustány, another place with thermal water bath, a much younger and more dynamic spot to enjoy, 20 kilometres from Keszthely. If it is not enough, there is Zalakaros, where thermal water is the presence of oil diggers, it is not oil they found but thermal water (a distance of 30 kilometres form Keszthely). All three places have recently been renovated and extended.
Let us not forget about the historical and cultural background of the vicinity of Vonyarcvashegy. Sümeg, Szigliget, settlements with castles with special cultural events held inside. Or Badacsony and Balaton uplands with local wines to taste. A classic cultural event is that local wine producers offer their products from settlement to settlement creating a festival atmosphere.
About the village of Vonyarcvashegy
It is a popular holiday resort both in Hungary and abroad.
It is situated on the southern slopes of the Keszthely Mountains, near Lake Balaton.
The first part of its name is of Slavonic origin and it means a settlement of wine-dressers and wine-growers. The second part is originated from the name of Mt. Vas.
The settlement was first mentioned in written documents in 1335. In 1545, during the war against the Turks the majority of the village was destroyed.
In 1741 the whole area became the property of count Kristóf Festetics.
The first national census in 1785 registered only 108 bondsmen in Vonyarc which did not have even a proper street at that time. The inhabitants earned their living by agriculture and fishing.
Vonyarc and Vashegy were united in 1846, since then the village has been called Vonyarcvashegy.
In the middle of the 19th century bathing became very popular and the shipping boom changed the life of Vonyarcvashegy for ever, however the developments shifted into second gear only after 1861 with the construction of the Southern Railway.
Nevertheless the shore in Vonyarcvashegy was not built up for a long time. The village became a bathing centre in the 1860s.
Today two-third of the houses in Vonyarcvashegy are holiday houses and the number of residents has exceeded 1800.
People living here are closely connected to tourism.
Infrastructurewise the settlement is highly developed. In summer numerous catering and commercial establishments, holiday centres and accommodation await guests.
The lido in Vonyarcvashegy is one of the most frequently visited beaches in this area. Even families with children speak in high terms of the sandy beach.
